Spirituality and constituency of saint Sava and saint Simeon
"You shined like the sun with your accomplishments
and like bright rays
your life and work
and your words enlightened us"
Only few lines from Teodosije can show us the greatness, sharpness of mind and accomplishments of the creator of the first Serbian dynasty, Stefan Nemanja, and spiritual uniter of Serbian people, Saint Sava.
In difficult circumstances of life in middle ages Serbian gave birth to a christian family that valued patriotism, dedication to religion, respected authorities and family harmony. The way in which they gave up riches of this world in search of spiritual wealth shows that progress of their state and people was above governmental interests. Stefan Nemanja placed the base of the first Serbian independent state that united the people and built a sense of national belonging. Although the independence was lost and regained trough centuries, the state of Nemanjic's symbolizes the unification of Serbian people. In his late years he replaced building of a state with building of a dwelling of young monks and space in which future generations will find peace and source of knowledge. He founded Hilandar, center of Serbian culture of middle age, center of literacy, the best and the greatest school for education of serbian youth. Even after death he remained authority for his family and people. Only his relics could bring peace to his quarreling sons. His holiness radiated love, loyalty, peace and harmony, values that were necessary in those like in these days.
How bigger, better stronger and more respected we would be today if we could pour our deeds in to the river of wisdom who's line was directed by Saint Simeon! What kind of offspring could come from a family whose goals were: justice, freedom, love, and respect?
Only great country men like Stefan Prvovencani and great holy men like Saint Sava. He spiritually united and brought under the orthodox church Serbian, he tied it to the church so strongly that not even many storms that blew over the Balkan could separate them. When even the last traces of middle age Serbian state disappeared, and when people was left without spiritual guidance, the church remained and in it comfort, testimony of a great past and a hope for a new freedom. Ash of Sava was spread from Vracar all over Serbia. He was even after death light in the darkness that rounded up the humiliated. With his each step he gave a base to a biography that, among Serbs, there is no equal. When he built monasteries, when he was book writer, missioner, doctor and a tutor he did that for fame and benefit of his people.
And what remains to people that in its difficult past had such great men, such as St. Simeon and St. Sava, but to continue the path that the saints drew, to take care of values they left, respect the principles they laid down and to guard the identity they fought for.
